Health Media Collaboratory Joins NORC at the University of Chicago

Press Release

8/2/2016, Chicago, IL.– The Health Media Collaboratory (HMCollab) group has joined the independent research institution, NORC at the University of Chicago. Throughout its history, HMCollab has applied scientific rigor to social media analysis as a way of studying public health. They have also explored how a changing media landscape affects Americans’ use of tobacco and their beliefs and attitudes towards it, as well as whether pharmaceutical advertisements educate patients and improve health—or merely spur drug sales.

“The Health Media Collaboratory group is a highly respected group of researchers who will bring expertise at the intersection of media and health to NORC,” said Dan Gaylin, president and CEO of NORC at the University of Chicago. “The scientific rigor that HMCollab’s data collection is known for, combined with their embrace of innovative and interdisciplinary methods make this unique group of individuals a perfect fit for NORC.”

HMCollab’s core expertise and historical focus has been tobacco research. More recently, this focus has expanded to include the intersection of tobacco and marijuana use, as well as the growing online marijuana community. HMCollab’s work and expertise will increase NORC’s capabilities and applications in these areas, and provide opportunities for future growth for HMC researchers and staff.

"We are thrilled to join NORC,” said Sherry Emery, director of HMCollab. “NORC’s commitment to rigor and scientific inquiry is a perfect fit for our research portfolio and vision for the future. Joining NORC affords HMCollab critically important added capacity to grow our research and add to NORC’s portfolio in a positive way.”

HMCollab has also brought together social science researchers, information scientists, and new media specialists to collaborate and develop rigorous, innovative, and multidisciplinary methods to study how media impacts health. They will continue this work at NORC.

“The Health Media Collaboratory group is a highly respected group of researchers who will bring expertise at the intersection of media and health to NORC.”
