NORC is one of the nation’s most trusted research organizations, and we put the utmost importance on the privacy and dignity of our study participants.

NORC conducts research that helps government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and a select few mission-driven businesses. They use that research to inform their programs and policies—everything from making childcare and education more accessible to making health care better and more affordable to making communities more resilient in the face of natural disasters.

The most important part of our research is study participants like you. Your willingness to share your time, your opinions, and details about your life can make your community and the world a better place. In return, we promise to protect your privacy, respect your person, and be as clear and transparent as possible about how the data you share with us will be used.

FAQ

NORC is an independent research organization affiliated with the University of Chicago. For more than 75 years, we have been conducting non-partisan research to help inform people in government, nonprofits, and businesses making decisions on key issues of the day. Our research addresses important social issues like employment, education, and health care.

Because most of our surveys need to be representative of a broad segment of the public to be valid, NORC uses a scientific selection process to identify participants. NORC typically selects participants from phone numbers or address lists of the full population to ensure a random and appropriate representation of geographies and demographics for use in obtaining study results.

NORC does not use telemarketing lists or phone books in selecting survey samples. For most studies, we create phone numbers by using area codes and prefixes of known geographic areas and randomly generating the last four digits. We typically don’t know who we are dialing, and some of the numbers we call end up being non-household or non-working numbers. Your number will never be sold, shared, or disclosed.

Your data is secure. The data we collect helps us measure, understand, and address some of the most pressing concerns faced by society. Our data scientists remove any personally identifiable information when compiling responses. Clients and others only see aggregated information, such as "Ten women 18-35 answered 'Yes' to this question."

Protecting your privacy is our top priority. Visit NORC’s Research Participant Privacy Policy to learn about our privacy practices and policy.

You can learn more about a survey and verify its legitimacy by visiting its project page on the NORC website or contacting our Respondent Care Center at surveyhelp@norc.org or 1(866) 856-6672 (NORC).

No. We will never try to sell you anything or ask for a donation. NORC is an objective, non-partisan research institution that conducts surveys to help inform people in government, nonprofits, and businesses making decisions on key issues of the day.

NORC telephone interviewers will identify themselves with their first and last name, as well as the name of the project or sponsor, the purpose of their call, and ask to speak with a specific member of your household. When leaving a voicemail or message on an answering machine, the NORC telephone interviewers will leave specific information, including the study name and a toll-free telephone number for that particular study.

All NORC field interviewers carry an identification badge that includes their photograph, name, title, ID number, and signature. The back of the ID has a distinctive hologram in the upper left corner along with a phone number to call to establish whether the person is a legitimate NORC field interviewer. You can also validate a field interviewer’s legitimacy by contacting our Respondent Care Center at surveyhelp@norc.org, 1 (866) 856-6672 (NORC), or by entering their employee ID and last name above in our Field Interviewer Verification tool.
