NORC at the University of Chicago Welcomes F. Jay Breidt as its Newest Senior Fellow in the Center for Excellence in Survey Research

Press Release

CHICAGO, April 1, 2019 — F. Jay Breidt, professor and former Chair of the Department of Statistics at Colorado State University, has joined NORC at the University of Chicago as a senior fellow in its Center for Excellence in Survey Research (CESR) for 2019.

Breidt has almost three decades of experiences in advancing a range of statistical methods such as survey sampling, time series, nonparametric regression, and uncertainty quantification for complex scientific models. Breidt brings substantial experience to NORC, having worked with many federal agencies over the course of his career, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Census, and the National Institute of Health (NIH).

“Jay is one of the few statisticians in academia who not only has a reputation for their methodological thought leadership, but also has practicability in conveying rigor of statistical methods to problems in practice,” said Don Jang, vice president and director of CESR. “We’re thrilled to have Jay on our team.”

While taking on this position, Breidt will maintain his role as a statistics professor with Colorado State University.

“This opportunity will open a lot of doors to increased collaboration between NORC and the faculty and graduate students at Colorado State,” said Breidt. “This mutually beneficial opportunity will enable us to leverage both teams’ strengths to continue making meaningful impacts for clients, while leaving a lasting impression on the survey research industry overall.”

Breidt received his PhD at Colorado State University in 1991 and spent the first nine years of his career at Iowa State University as an assistant professor and tenured associate professor, before returning to Colorado State in 2000. Since then, Breidt has taught courses at all levels in statistical theory and methods, while currently serving as Undergraduate Director for the Department of Statistics. Breidt is the Reviews Editor for the Journal of the American Statistical Association and The American Statistician, and has served on six review committee for the National Academy of Sciences.
