Girish Mundada Joins NORC at the University of Chicago Overseeing Data and Analytics Products

Press Release

CHICAGO, Nov. 12, 2018 – Girish Mundada joins the Information Technology department at NORC at the University of Chicago, overseeing data and analytics products as chief technology officer and senior vice president.

Mundada brings more than 30 years of experience in the field and will focus on computer hardware and software systems for NORC’s data and analytics products and capabilities.

“The decision to bring an expert who specializes in data and analytics products will help us build on the progress we continue to make towards increased automation and enhanced process efficiencies,” said Dan Gaylin, CEO and president of NORC. “Girish’s background and expertise make him a perfect fit for NORC as we continue to develop and enhance innovative data analytics and data science solutions for our clients.”

Before coming to NORC, Mundada held leadership roles in several large database companies. He served as vice president of databases at SAP, a C-level consultant at Teradata, and vice president of engineering for Ants Software. Most recently, he was global head for data analytics solutions at Hewlett Packard, where he was responsible for driving the company’s solutions around big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and analytic strategy.

“We’re excited to leverage Girish’s expertise in data and analytics products, building platforms at scale, and monetizing data in the commercial space as we continue to think strategically about making an impact for our clients in new and transformative ways,” said Ron Jurek, chief information officer at NORC.

Mundada has served for the past four years on NORC’s Advisory Committee on Statistics, Machine Learning, and High Performance Computing. Earlier this year, he joined NORC as a consultant and has worked closely since then with the team running NORC’s DATA Enclave, a tool that allows sharing, among a closed community of researchers, of datasets that are too sensitive to share broadly. “NORC’s non-partisan and exacting approach to social science research is what interested me in becoming a full-time part of the team,” Mundada said. “I’m honored to be part of an organization whose research helps drive national and international programs forward, working to improve the human condition.”
