Luc Anselin, Ph.D., Expert in Spatial Econometrics, Named Senior Fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago
12/4/2014, Bethesda, MD—Luc Anselin, Ph.D., an expert in spatial econometrics, has been named a senior fellow at NORC at the University of Chicago where he will join the independent research organization’s International Projects department. Anselin is currently Regents' Professor, Walter Isard Chair, and was the founding director of the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. He previously held appointments at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; the University of Texas at Dallas; West Virginia University; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the Ohio State University.
Anselin is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an elected fellow of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science. In 2006, Anselin received the prestigious Alonso Memorial Prize for Innovative Work in Regional Science. He is an honored recipient of the 2005 Walter Isard Award.
“I’m very happy to be joining NORC as a senior fellow,” said Luc Anselin. “I’ve worked with the researchers at NORC many times in the past. I am looking forward to continuing to explore the intersection of spatial analysis and social science, and NORC’s long record of high-quality social science research makes our working together an ideal fit.”
Luc Anselin is director of the GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation at Arizona State University, and the developer of SpaceStat and GeoDa software. His contributions to the discipline of spatial econometrics have helped bring it into the mainstream of econometrics and have advanced the field of geographic information science.
“As an organization committed to high-quality research and analysis, NORC is thrilled to welcome Luc Anselin to the team,” said Dan Gaylin, president and CEO of NORC. “His expertise in geographical sciences will prove invaluable to both our staff and our clients alike.”
Anselin’s publications include many hundreds of articles and several edited books in the fields of quantitative geography, regional science, geographic information science, econometrics, economics, and computer science.
“Luc Anselin joining NORC represents the addition of a unique asset to the NORC staff,” said Jeffrey Telgarsky, executive vice president, Research Programs. “His work on spatial data science has been truly ground-breaking, and we are honored to have such a talented researcher join our organization.” Anselin’s well-known book Spatial Econometrics: Methods and Models remains one of the seminal works in the field, more than 25 years after its initial publication.
A native of Belgium, Luc Anselin earned his master’s degree in economics and econometrics at the Free University of Brussels. He later earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in the interdisciplinary field of regional science.
