Applications will be accepted through September 27, 2024.

NORC at the University of Chicago’s Equity Scholars Program invites graduate students and early career research professionals to apply for a unique mentored opportunity to conduct inclusive, equitable, and culturally sensitive research with top experts. From January to August 2025, up to two Equity Scholars will design and conduct secondary analyses of data from one of 12 datasets, and up to two Equity Scholars will conduct primary research using the AmeriSpeak® Amplify AAPI Panel. Available datasets range from the National Survey of Early Care and Education to the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey to National Immunization Surveys

The Equity Scholars Program is in its second year and builds on the success of NORC's previous Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Scholars Program. As before, NORC experts—including from its Center on Equity Research—will mentor these emerging social scientists drawn from various backgrounds, including historically marginalized and/or minoritized ones.

"Our program is a vital investment in the future of inclusive and equitable research that truly reflects and serves all segments of society,” said NORC research scientist Diana Serrano. “By mentoring and supporting early career scholars from diverse backgrounds, we're not just expanding the talent pathways in social science research, we're equipping a generation of researchers with the skills needed to tackle disparities and inequality head-on.”

Awardees will also participate in networking opportunities that could advance their careers.

“By supporting our Equity Scholars in various ways, we hope to generate future researchers who are able to conduct rigorous, inclusive and equitable research helping advance equity in policies and programs,” said Ashani Johnson-Turbes, director of NORC’s Center on Equity Research.

NORC will provide each Equity Scholar conducting secondary data analysis of a NORC-specified dataset with $7,000 total. Equity Scholars using the Amplify AAPI data will be provided guidance and training to develop and field up to 23 new survey questions through the Amplify AAPI Panel at no cost to them. Scholars are expected to commit approximately one day a week to the program over the eight-month period.

For eligibility requirements and details on the datasets and Amplify AAPI, visit NORC’s Equity Scholars Program page. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on September 27, 2024. Awardees will be announced in early November.
