Problem

There is a critical lack of information about Latinx arts and culture organizations in the United States.

The qualities and contributions of many Latinx arts organizations in the U.S. remain unknown and underrepresented in the systems, structures, and research that support the mainstream arts sector today. To address this dearth of information, the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) initiated a national survey of Latinx arts and culture organizations in 2019, but much has changed during that time. The pandemic did extreme damage to arts organizations across the country, and Latinx communities were disproportionately affected.

With a growing Latinx population in the United States who face inequitable access to resources and information in a highly charged political climate, NALAC believes a more inclusive and comprehensive assessment is necessary and can prompt a better understanding of the Latinx arts landscape to advise future programs and priorities.

Solution

A new research partnership aims to advance the needs and raise the national visibility of Latinx arts and culture organizations.

NALAC is partnering with NORC to expand on its 2019 survey. Goals of this new research partnership include broadening NALAC’s national directory of Latinx arts and culture organizations, garnering wider and more comprehensive survey participation among these organizations, and revamping the 2019 survey instrument to focus on pressing issues for such organizations, including long-term sustainability and post-pandemic recovery. The project involves survey design, fielding, and analysis and will result in the development of an interactive website and digital advocacy toolkit.

Result

Research findings will inform stakeholders efforts to advance the important work of Latinx arts and cultural organizations.

The interactive website and digital advocacy toolkit will launch in 2025.
