The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research Launch New Poll

Press Release

The nationally representative UChicago Harris/AP-NORC survey series will explore important public policy issues.

CHICAGO, October 8, 2018 — The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research are collaborating on a new series of surveys designed to inform the public debate and contribute to academic studies.

The first of these new UChicago Harris/AP-NORC polls will be released later this week.

Harris Public Policy faculty, NORC researchers, and AP editors and reporters will work collaboratively to develop and field survey questions that will both advance research and inform public discourse on key policy issues facing the nation.

“The poll provides our faculty an opportunity to generate new insights into the interplay between public opinion and public policy,” said Katherine Baicker, Dean and Emmett Dedmon Professor at Harris. “We are excited to partner with NORC and The Associated Press to conduct rigorous, thought-provoking surveys and share the findings with policymakers and the public.”

Each poll will be conducted using the AmeriSpeak Omnibus®, a monthly multi-client survey using NORC’s probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population. The surveys will feature interviews with about 1,000 adults, and the interviews will be conducted online and by telephone.

“We are excited to begin working with the team at the Harris school, and to continue our ongoing collaboration with NORC, two institutions at the University of Chicago with reputations for research excellence,” said David Scott, a deputy managing editor at The Associated Press. “The poll findings will provide high-quality and timely public opinion data that will enhance our news coverage of important policy issues.”

Harris and AP-NORC will prepare a report highlighting the key findings of each poll. In addition, Harris and AP-NORC will develop a joint press release and coordinate with AP on potential press coverage of the results. All of the data will be released for public use about six months after the report release.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with the Harris’s School’s faculty to conduct impactful public opinion research,” said Dan Gaylin, President and Chief Executive Officer of NORC. “These studies will look at important public policy issues facing the nation and provide timely insights to the public, media, and researchers.”

“We are looking forward to collaborating with the Harris’s School’s faculty to conduct impactful public opinion research.”
