Problem

The World Bank wanted to include the United States in its global survey of over 155 economies.

The World Bank Enterprise Surveys provide extensive economic data to be used by researchers, policy makers, and the public. The World Bank has been conducting enterprise surveys in over 155 economies around the world for the last 20 years, with each country covered every three years. For the first time, the United States will be included in this international study beginning in 2024. To do this, the World Bank needed to partner with a trusted research organization.

Solution

NORC will conduct more than 3,000 interviews with a representative sample of U.S. businesses.

The World Bank has partnered with NORC and Kapa Research to conduct 3,030 interviews with top managers and owners of a nationally representative sample of businesses throughout the United States. Companies are randomly selected and contacted for an in-person survey to be conducted between April and December 2024. Businesses will provide insight into topics such as access to finance, corruption, infrastructure, and performance.

Result

Insights will inform potential private sector development in the United States.

The results of this survey will be used to develop policies in the U.S. and to promote the study of private sector development at the national and global level. The data will also be used for Business Ready, the World Bank’s new flagship report benchmarking the business environment and investment climate in most economies worldwide. The report assesses the regulatory framework and public services directed at firms, and the efficiency with which regulatory framework and public services are combined in practice. In addition, survey participants will receive a summary of the main results, with benchmarks against regional and income groups.
