Jay is a senior fellow in the Statistics & Data Science department at NORC at the University of Chicago. Jay is a mathematical statistician with expertise in survey sampling, time series, nonparametric regression, and uncertainty quantification for complex scientific models. His research interests in complex surveys include small area estimation, calibration and weighting methods, variance estimation, multi-source data integration, and nonprobability sampling.
At NORC, Jay has provided statistical expertise on projects ranging from data quality assessments for the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, to sampling methodology reviews for the National Agricultural Statistics Service, to integration of probability and nonprobability samples for the National Center for Health Statistics.
Jay is Professor Emeritus and past Chair of the Department of Statistics at Colorado State University. He has a distinguished record of academic achievements including extensive refereed publications and continuous research funding since 1991 from a variety of federal agencies. He has presented over 130 invited short courses, conference talks, and academic seminars. He has served as associate editor for seven top journals in statistics and Reviews Editor for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Breidt was a member of six review committees for the National Academy of Sciences and twice served on the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. He is currently serving his second term and chairing the Census Scientific Advisory Committee. Jay has received numerous honors, including recognition with a national prize in environmental statistics and elected fellowship in the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
