Ting is a recognized leader in survey methodology.

Ting has more than 25 years of experience conducting survey research and working on various aspects of designing and implementing large-scale federal surveys. Her expertise encompasses, but is not limited to, questionnaire design and evaluation, survey protocol development, monitoring, evaluating, and improving data quality, data visualization, and complex survey data analysis.

Ting has published extensively on survey methodology. Her current research interests focus on multimode survey designs, web and mobile surveys, and applying data science techniques to evaluate data quality in the multimode and multidata environment.

Ting is a long-time member of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). She served on the executive committee of the European Survey Research Association, chaired AAPOR's Diversity Subcommittee, and was the co-editor-in-chief for the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology. She served on the organizing committee for the 2024 International Total Survey Error Workshop and is currently serving on the 2030 Census Advisory Committee.

Prior to joining NORC, Yan was a vice president at Westat, leading its Survey Methods Unit and serving on various committees and task forces aimed to improve efficiency of data collection and survey data quality. Before Westat, she worked at the University of Michigan as a research assistant professor and at Abt Global. She also held a previous position at NORC. She is an adjunct faculty member for the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) and the Program in Survey and Data Science, University of Michigan, teaching graduate-level courses and serving on dissertation committees.
